RIA Novosti: Gastro-tourism offered to make a priority in Russia

The Association of Cultural-Gastronomic Tourism has proposed to include gastronomic tourism in the target program for the development of tourism in Russia that is being developed. This is stated in a letter sent by the head of the organization, Irina Klimkina, to the Minister of Economic Development, Maxim Oreshkin.

The Association notes that now the program has five priority types of tourism: cultural, educational, active, recreational, cruise and ecological. “We propose to add to this list the direction of gastronomic tourism,” the letter says, which is at the disposal of RIA Novosti.

According to the association, the development of gastronomic tourism with the release of unique regional products can support and motivate tourists’ interest in holidays in Russia. “Given the global trends in the tourism industry, we believe that it is gastronomic tourism that can become a driving force for the development of domestic and inbound tourism in Russia” – writes Klimkina.

As an example, she cited the pilot program “Taste of Astrakhan,” which was supported by regional authorities, tour operators and territorial production. “For integration with the global tourist services market, the association offered the post of Russia’s gastronomic ambassador to a number of world celebrities who highly appreciate Russian cuisine. At the research stage compiling a list of gastrobrends to be considered by UNESCO – with a view to including them in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind, “the letter says.

The Association also proposed to include gastrotourism in the strategy of tourism development in Russia until 2035 and approve the definition methodology “gastronomic tourism” and “gastronomic specialty (brand)” at the federal level. “We are confident that in the period of international tension, the potential of gastro tourism will open Russia to foreign guests with Klimkina concludes that the new positions of hospitality and service, an unconventional and non-stereotypical perception of the cultural-historical “mental code” of “Russians”.
